Subject: WASILC Statement on Violence and Acts of Hate Against Asian Americans Pacific Islanders

WASILC Stands in Solidarity with the Asian American Pacific Islander Community

WASILC stands in solidarity with the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Community. Individuals of Asian descent Americans have continuously experienced racism and violence in the United States and Anti-Asian violence and rhetoric have risen sharply since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. While we know that hate crimes are vastly underreported, there has been a surge of hate incidents toward the AAPI community Asian Americans since the pandemic began, with “Stop AAPI Hate” tracking nearly 4,000 reports between March 19, 2020 and February 28, 2021. The true scope of anti-Asian harassment and violence is likely much higher. AAPI communities need our support and to be listened to.

We honor the victims of the mass shooting in Georgia by speaking their names: Delaina Ashley Yaun, Soon Chung Park, Hyun Jung Grant, Suncha Kim, Yong Ae Yue, Paul Andre Michels, Daoyou Feng, and Xiaojie Tan.
